Homemade Chocolate Yogo

Homemade Chocolate Yogo

A few weeks ago my Mum made the boys a treat for when we visited.  When I tried it I said wow, this tastes very similar to the chocolate yogo you can buy in the supermarkets.  When I asked Mum what the ingredients were I was amazed how simple they were.  It doesn’t take very long to make up a batch and best of all it is cheaper and better for you.

I made a batch at home using a2 Milk as that is what we have switched over too to try and stop the uggh feeling in our tummies and it’s working.

INGREDIENTS

3 tbs cornflour
3 tbs cocoa
2 tbs raw sugar
600ml a2 Milk

LETS PUT IT ALL TOGETHER
1. Place all ingredients into a saucepan, add a little milk to start with and mix to a smooth paste.

2. Add remaining milk, put on a low heat and continually stir until it thickens (about 5 minutes). Then turn off give a final stir, pour into moulds and chill uncovered until it is cool to eat.

Once cooled you can cover and store in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.

Makes 4 serves.

You can easily double, triple the recipe.  It will just take longer for it too thicken.

My mum made this years ago; she called it Chocolate Blancmange.

Yes that’s the fancy name my mum told me too. 🙂

I know the milk feeling you are talking about. We swithed to Tweedvale and B-D Farm Paris Creek. They are both local dairies (to us) and their milk is unhomogenised. I think the main difference is that it’s REAL milk!

If you find you get a skin on your yogo, place some clingfilm directly on top of the hot/warm mixture before cooling. These old fashioned puddings and can also be made with custard powder for another flavour.

Hi, I was wondering if you need full cream milk for this recipe, or does it still work with low-fat milk? Also, do you use Australian Tbs (20mls) or US Tbs (15mls)? Cheers

    • Amanda September 26, 2014 at 12:02 pm #

You can use full cream, skim, light. I use Australian.

What a brilliant idea. I loved yogo when I was little. I think I’ll have to make a batch of this over the weekend. Yummo! Thank you for linking up with our Fabulous Foodie Fridays party – have a great weekend! xx

    Hi,
I tried this today and am surprised that the yogo isn’t thickening even after adding an extra tablespoon of corn flour 🙁 I’ve put it in freezer now. Where could I have gone wrong?

I don’t have any raw sugar. Can I use white sugar or brown sugar?

    • Amanda October 2, 2014 at 6:36 pm #

Yes you can use white sugar.

What a neat idea! I just love yogo – it looks just like the real thing and I bet it tastes even better!

I tried this today exactly as per recipe (including using A2 milk) and it did not set at all. I looked up an old school blancmange recipe and it had same ingredients but 6 tbs of corn flour!!! Sounds like a lot but might try next time.

    • Amanda October 24, 2014 at 9:40 pm #

Hi Julie, I have tested this recipe several times and it has always thickened with these exact measurements, I’m not sure why your’s didn’t thicken.

Did you keep it on the heat and stir until it thickens? It states in the recipe that this can take at least 5 minutes so keep stirring on the the stove until you find it thickening.

      • Amanda May 14, 2018 at 9:24 am #

        Yes keep on the heat.

Hi this looks so simple & my little people love choc yogo but we have discovered one of them is dairy intolerant – does anyone have any experience with an alternative milk?

    • Amanda November 18, 2014 at 7:53 am #

Hi Renee, I believe you can use a dairy alternative like soy or almond – but I haven’t tried it myself. Maybe give half a batch a go so if it doesn’t work you don’t waste too much. Let me know if it does work.

    Hi Amanda 🙂
New to the world of cooking – better late than never 🙂
Love all your recipes xo but I never have on hand the required 4 🙁

To make this yogo thicken I take it it’s the corn flour is essential ?

    • Amanda December 3, 2014 at 6:31 am #

Yes you need the corn flour to thicken it.

    What’s raw sugar n a2 milk ?

    • Amanda December 7, 2014 at 3:07 pm #

Raw sugar is granulated sugar that is brown in colour, you will find it with all the other sugars in the supermarket. a2 is a brand of milk, you can use normal milk.

made this as a treat for my daughter. She loved it. It tastes wonderful. We’ve tipped it over strawberries too. My lg is telling her school friends about it (she’s 4!) simple and tasty! Thank you

    • Amanda January 8, 2015 at 4:51 pm #

Hi Rach, thank you for the lovely feedback, I’m glad your little one enjoyed it.

This chocolate is fantastic! Thankyou so much for this recipe. This is now a whole family treat 🙂

  16. Daisy January 29, 2015 at 6:45 pm #

I tried it for the third time and this time it thickened 🙂 added an extra tbsp cornflour and yanked up the heat. Also added some dark choco chips when it was warm, after pouring it in cups. Thank you Amanda, always love your simple, doable and tasty recipes 🙂

Yum! Great recipe! I added vanilla
and cinnamon and poured just a drizzle of maple syrup over the top. Trying hard not to eat it all! Better save some for the kids…

    Hi folks,

Just wondering if anyone has made this in one batch and the. Scooped it into cups? I am looking to layer it with biscuits crumbs to make little dinosaur cups.

    Thanks in advance!

    • Amanda October 10, 2015 at 9:48 am #

Hi Natalie, this would be perfect for that. I would recommend pouring into the cups first though and then setting so they come out nice and smooth.

  19. Lisa December 2, 2016 at 11:55 am #

Can i use custard powder instead of cornflour?

    • Amanda December 12, 2016 at 4:50 pm #

      Yes, it should work.
